Good tiles can still look bad if they are laid badly. Use this checklist to supervise the work.
Prepare the surface
The base must be clean, level and properly cured. Check levels with a long straight edge and fix dips before fixing tiles.
Use the right materials
- Use tile adhesive for large vitrified tiles; use a cement bed for thick stone
- Keep joints uniform with spacers (2–3 mm for most tiles)
- Use epoxy grout in wet areas for better stain and water resistance
Check the finish
Tap tiles with a coin to test for hollow spots, check alignment and slope towards drains in bathrooms, and keep a few spare tiles from the same batch for future repairs.
