The countertop takes heat, water, knives and daily wear, so material choice matters. Here is how the common options compare.
Granite
Natural, heat-resistant and good value. It needs occasional sealing and has visible patterns that vary from slab to slab.
Quartz
Engineered, non-porous and low-maintenance with consistent colours. It costs more than granite and can be damaged by very hot pans, so use trivets.
Other options
- Marble: beautiful but stains and etches easily
- Stainless steel: hygienic and heat-proof, but dents and scratches
- Laminate or compact laminate: budget-friendly but less heat-resistant
How to choose
For heavy Indian cooking, granite or quartz is the safest bet. Ask to see a full slab, check the edge profile and confirm the sink cut-out and hob cut-out details before fabrication.
